Project: West Barrack Renovation and Addition
Location: Indianapolis, IN
Description: Ter Horst, Lamson & Fisk, Inc. provided structural
engineering design services for the West Barrack Renovation and Addition at
Culver Academies in Culver, Indiana. The project consisted of the renovation of
the West Barrack, which is a 12,800 s.f. structure dating from the 1800's and a
new addition of 9,400 s.f.

Addition was a four-story steel framed structure utilizing pre-cast concrete
floor panels, metal deck and steel joist roof system and an exterior load
bearing masonry wall system clad in brick and stone similar to the original
building.

Design for the new addition incorporates two story stone and brick clad
concrete arches around the south end logia similar to the design of the arches
in the original building. The existing concrete slab and floor joist system in
the barracks was deteriorated and required extensive repair.

The existing floor joists were typically 2" wide by 13¾" deep concrete joists
that were deteriorated due to moisture induced corrosion. The joists were
repaired by replacing all of the deteriorated reinforcing and rebuilding the
joists with an epoxy modified repair material.
